Lake Turkana is the largest desert lake in the world with an area of 7,560 km2. It is the northern-most of Kenya's Rift Valley lakes surrounded by Turkana District in the west and Marsabit District in the east. The lake is fed by the Omo River in Ethiopia and has no outlet resulting in high fluctuations in water level determined by the river and rainfall in Ethiopia. In the mid-1970s, a valuable fishery developed as rising water levels created ideal breeding and feeding conditions for Nile tilapia in Ferguson Gulf.
